The 200 Best Comics of My Lifetime (The Last 20 Years): 120-111

120. Thunderbolts #1
Marvel - April 1997
Writer - Kurt Busiek
Artist - Mark Bagley
The first issue of the ongoing Thunderbolts series featured a rag-tag team of super villains joining together for the good of mankind, or at least that was the thought; the reality of the situation became obvious when Baron Zemo revealed himself as the orchestrator of the team at the issue's close, bringing forth one of the most shocking twists in the last two decades.

119. Powers #34
Image - August 2003
Writer - Brian Michael Bendis
Artist - Michael Avon Oeming
As the final arc of the first volume of Powers kicked into gear, we were treated to a tour of Christian Walker's life; this issue focused on a 1940s style comic book hero and played on lots of the classic stereotypes from the era.

118. The Authority #13
Wildstorm - May 2000
Writer - Mark Millar
Artist - Frank Quitely
The first issue of the series to feature a new creative team as Millar and Quitely attempted to maintain the cinematic feel of the series, while also introducing many weirder elements and disturbing images; it was the start of one of the best runs the book enjoyed, and solidified both creators as A-List talent.

117. Final Crisis #4
DC - November 2008
Writer - Grant Morrison
Artists - J. G. Jones & Carlos Pacheco
For many people, the highlight of Final Crisis was the death of Batman in issue 6, but that was never the best moment in my eyes; the true highlight was in this issue when Darkseid wins, forcing Dan Turpin to succumb to his will and become his vessel in the land of the living.

116. Marvels #2
Marvel - February 1994
Writer - Kurt Busiek
Artist - Alex Ross
The classic issue of the legendary Marvels mini-series focusing on the emergence of Mutants into the Marvel Universe; the way this issue deals with racism and fear, particularly with the focus being on a small, deformed child being perceived as a threat, is truly heartbreaking.

115. Green Arrow #1
DC - April 2001
Writer - Kevin Smith
Artist - Phil Hester
Back in the day, when Kevin Smith wrote a comic book it was not only fantastic, but important, as well; this issue features the resurrection of Oliver Queen, as well as a look at world without Green Arrow and how his absence has affected his former allies.

114. Infinity Gauntlet #4
Marvel - October 1991
Writer - Jim Starlin
Artists - George Perez & Ron Lim
The event that stands up as one of the best of all time, the Infinity Gauntlet kicked into high gear around halfway through as the Marvel Heroes confronted the murderous threat of Thanos; the issue is absolutely fantastic, showing how all the heroes are outmatched, and then the Cosmic heroes turn up.

113. Daredevil #32
Marvel - June 2002
Writer - Brian Michael Bendis
Artist - Alex Maleev
The second arc of Bendis and Maleev's Daredevil run kicked off with Matt Murdock's identity being exposed to the world; the genius of this move proved to be the highlight of the run, proving that Murdock was only human as he is forced to battle his enemies, as well as the illegality of his actions.

112. Superman: Red Son #1
DC - June 2003
Writer - Mark Millar
Artist - Dave Johnson
The idea of reinventing Superman into a Soviet superhero for an Elseworlds tale was a genius one, and the team of Mark Millar and Dave Johnson turned the concept into one of the best Superman stories ever written; the approach is genius and the way the supporting characters are incorporated is fantastic.

111. Identity Crisis #5
DC - December 2004
Writer - Brad Meltzer
Artist - Rags Morales
The whole Identity Crisis mini-series was an incredible moment in the history of the DC Universe, but perhaps the most shocking was the race against time as Robin's father was placed in mortal peril; the resulting deaths of both Jack Drake and Captain Boomerang reverberated throughout the DCU and set up Batman and Flash stories for years to come.
