The Pull-List - 11/11/2010

The Essential Comic

Amazing Spider-Man #648

By Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos

The start of a new status quo for Spider-Man kicks off in this issue; and it's absolutely fantastic. The first half is a rip-roaring adventure as Spider-Man leads the Avengers in a battle against Doctor Octopus. There's an underlying series of sub-plots including someone stalking J. Jonah Jameson, and some villains planting something at an airfield in New Jersey. The second half of the book is about Peter Parker's struggling social life, and his search for a new apartment and employment. The cliffhanger's a nice touch, too, bringing back a classic villain who's been absent for years.

And the Rest

Batgirl #15

By Bryan Q. Miller and Dustin Nguyen

This series never fails to impress. The cartoony artwork that opens this issue is absolutely hilarious, and the story picks up a well kept pace. Dustin Nguyen is a welcome addition to the book, and everything just feels fun and fresh. Definitely one of the best Batman books being published right now.

Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne #6

By Grant Morrison, Lee Garbett and Pere Perez

The final issue of this fantastic mini-series seems to be something of a nostalgic instalment. Batman himself doesn't play that big a part in the proceedings, instead, the focus shifts to Red Robin and the Justice League. Some people won't get the subtlety of Bruce Wayne's return to life, but it is absolutely incredible to behold for a true Batman fan.

Chew #15

By John Layman and Rob Guillory

The finale to the first epoch of this series is a brilliant one, but does seem to be more reliant on personal character development than story. There's a nice sequence featuring Savoy at the start, and some nice revelations throughout, while the ending starts the next big thing for Chew, which will be interesting to uncover over the coming months.

Justice League: Generation Lost #13

By Judd Winick and Joe Bennett

Another issue that serves as just a big fight. But it's brilliant fun to read. And the shocking ending is something I didn't expect at all.

Rating: 8/10

New Avengers #6

By Brian Michael Bendis and Stuart Immonen

The shock death wasn't shocking. But this issue looked gorgeous and read like the final act of a huge action epic. This has been a fun ride, but I think I'm done with the Avengers books.

Rating: 8/10

Red Robin #17

By Fabian Nicieza and Marcus To

The first Batman Inc book comes as a finale to the previous status quo. It's a fantastic issue that was very nearly the essential comic. The idea of giving Red Robin his own Catwoman is brilliant, while the scenes featuring the returned Bruce Wayne-Batman were fantastic.

Rating: 10/10

Ultimate Thor #2

By Jonathan Hickman and Carlos Pacheco

This Thor story is easily the best Thor story being published right now. It's shocking, action-packed and has actual stakes. The only problem I have with it, is that it's already halfway finished.
